To whom it may concern: It is an honor to offer this unsolicited letter of recommendation for Roger La Borde. He is an extremely gifted and unique individual. I consider myself very fortunate to be his friend. I initially met Roger approximately three years ago. One of my patients had been in a prolonged coma following a tragic head injury. The incident occurred just after her graduation from high school. Following an initially lifesaving neurosurgical brain procedure, the patient never fully regained consciousness. After three years of intensive medical care, exhausting all possible avenues of recovery, the family had to make the painful decision to withdraw life support. It was my responsibility, as family physician, to facilitate and oversee this process, along with a remarkable hospice medical team.During this ordeal, Roger became the spiritual advisor and family healer. He personally turned what was an absolutely devastating set of circumstances into one of the most wonderfully powerful opportunities for spiritual growth, compassion and human understanding that I have ever experienced. That ordeal turned into an extraordinary life changing event for all present, including family, friends, clergy, doctors and hospice staff. The feeling and experience that Roger facilitated was summed up by the hospice physician who, upon leaving, commented with a shake of her head "I've been doing this as a hospice physician for many years, but I've never witnessed anything like that before."Roger it turns out, has studied with a variety of healers around the world. He lived for a time with Native Americans, was incorporated into their tribe and their culture and was mentored by a now renowned Indian Medicine Man. When asked, Roger has incorporated a variety of Native American rituals into his healing practices which have added a tremendous degree of respect, honor and sacredness to human. life and death. When my own Mother was in her last 24 hours of life, being cared for at home by my family, I called Roger at his home in Colorado. Something inspired me to contact Roger and, without asking for anything, simply connect with him and let him know what was transpiring. He asked me a few questions about my mother and told me that he would meditate about her on his porch after his family went to bed. At 2 AM, he called me, saying that he had a vision that he needed to explain to me because it involved important things for me to do and say to my mother to assist in her transition. His insight, wisdom and guidance were absolute gifts from heaven. Without ever meeting my mother, his detailed advice concerning her needs was uncanny. Again, his facilitation led to a joyful and spiritually meaningful experience that can only be described as magical. None in my family can explain it we certainly could never forget it and it changed us forever. Because of those experiences, I have assisted Roger in teaching other health care providers his views concerning health, spirituality and the true meaning of healing. He led a workshop for the San Diego Hospice Staff, dealing with the needs of patients and their loved ones at the end of life. It was powerful and inspiring to all in attendance. Recently, he gave a Keynote address on Healing at a national conference on Wilderness Medicine in Colorado, sponsored by University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. The physicians and other health care providers in attendance gave him rave reviews. He is now scheduled for an expanded time at next year's conference. Roger is an honest, unassuming, gentle and humble human being. He is a gifted healer. He has donated his life to assisting people in medical crisis; from coma to terminal illness to transplant patients. He does not charge for his services and has nothing to sell. But his mere presence can often elevate the level of human understanding, love, wisdom and true healing that subsequently occurs. I am most pleased to offer Roger my highest recommendation as a person who has been blessed with extraordinary wisdom, compassion and a servant's heart. The medical community has a great deal to learn from his insights and experiences regarding the true nature of healing, the innermost needs of patients and the things that truly touch all of our souls.
